UNGA78: High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell travels to New York

From 17 to 22 September, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell will travel to New York, where he will host and participate in several high-level multilateral events and bilateral meetings throughout the high-level week of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

On Sunday 17 September, together with President of the European Council, Charles Michel, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will represent the EU in a trilateral meeting with the African Union and the United Nations. The President of the European Council and the High Representative/Vice-President, accompanied by Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen, will then meet the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.

On Monday 18 September, High Representative Borrell will co-chair a meeting on the Middle East Peace Process, together with the representatives of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the League of Arab States, Egypt and Jordan. In the afternoon, High Representative Borrell will chair an informal meeting of EU Foreign Affairs Ministers. He will hold a press conference at the end of the meeting (ca. 18:00 EST), which will be transmitted on EbS. He will then attend a G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting.

On Tuesday 19 September, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will join President Michel and President von der Leyen for the opening session of the General Debate of the 78th UN General Assembly. He will then convene leaders from the Western Balkans for the traditional meeting organised on the margins of the UNGA. 

On Wednesday 20 September, High Representative Borrell will co-chair the 13th Ministerial meeting of the Global Counterterrorism Forum, co-hosted by the European Union and Egypt. In the afternoon, he will participate in the Ministerial meeting of the Ad-Hoc Liaison Committee on Palestine, hosted by Norway. In the evening, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will speak at a public event at New York University on Europe’s role in the world.

On Thursday 21 September, High Representative Borrell will deliver a statement on behalf of the EU at the Ministerial-level Preparatory Meeting for the Summit of the Future. In the afternoon, he will deliver a statement at the meeting of the Group of Friends on Accountability following the Russian aggression against Ukraine. He will accompany President Michel, who will deliver the statement on behalf of the EU during the General Debate of the UN General Assembly. In the evening, he will attend the dinner of the Transatlantic Foreign Ministers, hosted by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

The High Representative Borrell will hold a series of bilateral meetings with international interlocutors.
