Venezuela : International Contact Group statement on the Venezuelan National Assembly elections held on 6 December 2020

08.12.2020
Brussels

The following Members of the International Contact Group on Venezuela (ICG), Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Panama, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Uruguay refer to their Declaration of 17 September 2020 stating that the only sustainable solution to the Venezuelan crisis will be a political, peaceful and democratic one, through credible, inclusive and transparent legislative and presidential elections.

They concluded that conditions were not currently in place for a credible, inclusive and transparent process for electing a new National Assembly, and called for all obstacles to political participation to be removed in order for a meaningful electoral process to take place.

They do not consider the Venezuelan National Assembly elections held on 6 December to have met internationally accepted conditions, as called for by the ICG and other international groups. Nor did they meet the conditions required by Venezuelan laws.

Under these circumstances, they cannot recognise the results of this electoral process as legitimate or representative of the will of the Venezuelan people. They express their continuing willingness to support efforts to foster a common understanding and response to the situation in Venezuela and the return of the country to democracy and the rule of law.
