VII High-level Political Dialogue Mexico-European Union

The Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Carmen Moreno Toscano, and the Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs of the European External Action Service, Enrique Mora, co-chaired today in Mexico City the VII High-level Political Dialogue Mexico-European Union.

Both parties welcomed the excellent state of bilateral relations and confirmed the strategic ties and bonds of friendship, based on the adherence to the rule of law and human rights as well as mutual trust. They committed to pursue a timely signature of the modernised Global Agreement between Mexico and the European Union to allow for the subsequent ratification process and entry into force.

Vice-Minister Moreno Toscano and Deputy Secretary General Mora exchanged views about answers of both regions to the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic consequences.

They recalled the recent Leaders’ Declaration of the G20 Summit that took place at the end of October in Rome, Italy, and reaffirmed the commitment of both parties to multilateralism to face global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.

The senior officials also welcomed the rapprochement between both regions, the importance of which became evident with the participation of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in the Summit of Heads of state and government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States on 18 September in Mexico City. Moreover, in this context they confirmed the importance of the upcoming Leaders’ Summit of the EU with the Presidencies of regional Latin American mechanisms, which will take place on 2 December.

Both parties exchanged views about regional affairs as well as about other current international issues.

Mexico and the European Union committed to maintaining the level of the bilateral dialogue and to continuing work towards the consolidation of their strategic relationship.
