The European Union congratulates Hans Grundberg on his appointment as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen. This comes in deserved recognition of his utmost dedication and indefatigable efforts to the cause of peace in Yemen these past years, as Ambassador of the European Union to Yemen and with Sweden’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  

The devastating conflict in Yemen has recently entered its seventh year. The economic and humanitarian situation is dire. The European Union looks forward to continue working closely with Ambassador Grundberg in his new capacity and with the international community towards a sustainable and inclusive political solution, led and owned by the people of Yemen. This is the only way to put a definitive end to the conflict and to ensure a united, sovereign and stable Yemen.
