Yemen: Statement by the Spokesperson on the resumption of medical flights out of Sana'a

Brussels

A first medical flight carrying a group of Yemeni citizens in need of treatment took place between Sana´a and Amman this week.

This measure brings hope to thousands of Yemenis who are in urgent need of medical care and are unable to reach other airports in the country because of the ongoing conflict. It also represents a significant confidence-building measure between the parties to the conflict, which needs to be built upon.

The European Union commends all actors who have made this first initiative possible. These flights will hopefully continue and lay the groundwork for a sustainable solution, aiming at connecting Sana´a with the outside world.

In this context, the European Union reaffirms its full support to the work of the UN Special Envoy, Martin Griffiths, and reiterates its commitment to supporting the UN-led process leading to sustainable peace in Yemen, in the interest of this country and its people.
