BREATHING UNDERWATER is an emotional, character-driven drama set in the secretive world of a women's shelter. It tells the story of Emma who is whisked away in the dead of night, covered in bruises and unexpectedly pregnant. As she grapples with her pregnancy and her emotional shackles to her husband, Emma rediscovers lost facets of herself through her unlikely camaraderie and strife with the other women of the shelter. Individual traumas intertwine and despite their differences, a delicate sisterhood emerges.
‘What does it mean to be subjected to violence within the walls of your own home? What psychological state does a woman live in day-to-day when she’s been stripped of her dignity by the very person who professes to love her? If there’s one thing this film conveys by small touches and with great authenticity, through looks, silences and eloquent dialogue, it’s the hidden, inner pain that domestic abuse victims carry inside of them, even once they’ve up and left.’ (Cineuropa)
