It is the Spring of 1945 on the German island of Amrum, 12-year-old Nanning spends his days amidst the sea breezes, potato fields, seal hunting trips, and helping his mother with chores. When their anti-fascist neighbor Tessa mentions that the war will soon be over, the boy - too young to understand the political implications - is pleased to imagine that his father, a Nazi officer, might soon be coming home.
‘Fatih Akin and Hark Bohm (the latter’s life the film is based on) craft a setting rich in dramatic tension: the collapse of Nazi Germany, the uncertain promise of post-war freedom and the growing pains of a boy caught between the two. Within this microcosm, AMRUM explores not just the loss of innocence, but also the redefinition of morality in times of collapse. It’s a story of survival, of facing uncomfortable truths, and of growing up surrounded by silence and complicity.’ (Cineuropa)
