When the somewhat shy Maja marries Janne, a man she barely knows, her husband wants them to live on Stormskerry at the outermost edges of community life. The harsh and unforgiving island makes every day a struggle for survival, but also offers a freedom for shaping their own lives and existence. Over the years, Maja and Janne and their children will face many challenges, but these are interwoven with moments of happiness and love; and in time Maja discovers strengths she didn't believe she possessed.
‘From the roughly 1,300 pages that comprise Blomqvist’s literary saga [which the film is adapted from], director Tiina Lymi has extracted a love story for the ages.’ (The Film Verdict)
