Cairo, The EU-funded Integrated Sustainable National Energy Strategy to 2035 conference demonstrates the Government's cohesive energy strategy covering the next 20 years and is organized under the EU-funded project Technical Assistance to Support the Reform of the Energy Sector in Egypt (TARES) as part of the Energy Sector Policy Support Program (SPSP). Recognizing that the various components of the energy system are linked, and that individual sectorial plans are likely to be sub-optimal, the National Energy Strategy to 2035 is reinforced by the following goals:

  • Long term sustainability of the energy system: sector institutions to be financially independent and self-sustaining through competition and efficiency;
  • Energy security of supply: to meet the increasing demand for energy, a resilient and diversified supply chain should be built which will optimise the use of the natural resources of Egypt and import are prudent;
  • Good Governance Principles and Modernization: the roles of all public and private participants in the energy system should be clearly defined and understood, natural monopolies should be held accountable for performance; energy markets should be fair, accessible and transparent.

The Strategy has been supported by a National Egyptian Energy Model called TIMES-EGYPT, designed by European Consultants and is a technology-rich demand-driven tool to explore the evolution of the entire Egyptian energy scheme over the course of 20 years. The model has provided a range of different energy scenarios for the country – taking into account, coal power plant development, future nuclear generation, recent gas field finds, renewable energy plans as well as energy efficiency potentials. It has also offered cost efficient energy for the next 20 years, which is available to the Government to pursue along with other scenarios.

The conference is a unique opportunity for Egyptian public and private stakeholders, European policymakers and regulators, international investors in infrastructure and energy, in addition to energy sector players in Egypt or newcomers, to receive hands-on information and guidance about the Energy Strategy toward 2035 as well as business opportunities and challenges associated to it.

The panellists include H.E. Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, H.E. Minister of Petroleum, Minister Reinhold Brender, and Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the EU Delegation to Egypt, The Head of Information and Decision Support Centre at the Cabinet of Ministers, EU/TARES Team Leader, and energy modelling and planning experts.
