On 9 November, in the conference Room of the Executive Tower, a special edition of the lecture cycle "Coffee Talks" was held with the purpose of discussing the new European Data Protection Regulation.

The event opened with welcome words from Felipe Rotundo, President of the Regulatory and Control Unit of Personal Data (URCDP), who highlighted the recent assumption by Uruguay of the presidency of the Ibero-American Data Protection Network (RIPD).

Tomaz Gorisek, Head of the Political & Communication Section of the EU Delegation, highlighted the success and main developments of the new European regulations for the protection of fundamental data and underlined that the EU recognises Uruguay as a country that complies with all the necessary controls regarding the use of personal data.

Next, Katharina Ochse, Director of the Goethe Institut, spoke of the importance of data protection as a fundamental pillar of democracy.

Finally, José Clastornik, Executive Director of the Agency for Electronic Government and the Information & Knowledge Society (AGESIC), referred to the Uruguayan experience on the substantial improvement of data protection rights.

After the interventions, the film "Democracy, im Rausch der Daten" by director David Bernet (see http://www.democracy-film.de) was screened, which shows the ins and outs of the EU legislative process through a catchy and detailed story. It tells the fascinating and highly explosive story of a handful of politicians who try to protect their company in the digital world from the dangers of large volumes of data.
