Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the new Peace Agreement in Colombia

Text

I spoke today with Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin, who outlined to me the content of the new Peace Agreement reached in Havana.

This revised agreement reached between the Government of Colombia and FARC-EP as a consequence of the plebiscite in Colombia is good news.

Over the last six weeks the Government of President Santos, the leaders of the NO Campaign, the FARC-EP, and representatives of civil society have made a considerable effort to respond to the concerns and wishes of the Colombian people which were expressed in the vote on 2 October. I hope that the new text which has been agreed will command the broad support of Colombian society.

The European Union remains firmly committed to supporting the Colombia Peace Process, and in particular to implementing measures which will contribute to the construction of lasting and durable peace in Colombia.

In this context I hope to be able to welcome President Santos in Brussels on 12 December for the signature of the EU Trust Fund for Peace in Colombia.
