Statement by High Representative Mogherini on the adoption by the Colombian Congress of the Final Agreement between the government of Colombia and the FARC-EP
The adoption by the Colombian Congress on 30 November 2016 of the Final Peace Agreement between the government of Colombia and the FARC-EP confirms the confidence we have always had in the peace process. The broad debate that led to the revision of the agreement has helped to address key demands of various sections of Colombian society, to improve the text in several important ways and to find the necessary compromises.
Now, the important challenges that the implementation of the agreement entails will have to be met. It is essential that the constructive an open spirit that has led to the agreement continues so that all political forces and all sections of Colombian society engage actively in this historical moment.
The European Union for its part is committed to continuing to accompany Colombia's efforts to make peace a tangible reality for all its citizens and I have asked my Special Envoy, Eamon Gilmore, to continue his endeavours in this respect. On 12 December, the constitutive agreement of the EU Trust Fund for Colombia will be signed in Brussels, to further strengthen the common commitment of the EU and of its Member States to the success of the peace process, and to make sure all the Colombian citizens benefit from it.
