EU Launches Improving Secondary Education Programme in Malawi
On Wednesday, February 22nd 2017, the Minister of Education, Science and Technology Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano and Ambassador Marchel Gerrmann, launched the EU funded Improving Secondary Education in Malawi (ISEM) programme at Chimteka Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Mchinji.
Speaking at the launch, Ambassador Gerrmann said the EU is happy to support such an important sector for the development of the country, arguing that education is the key to finding employment and making a decent living for many communities. He said the ISEM programme, with a budget of 36 Million Euros, has been designed to support government in addressing challenges in the education sector.
ISEM will support Malawi Government's efforts to provide increased access to quality secondary education through a number of interventions. These include rehabilitation of Community Day Secondary Schools, teacher training, provision of teaching and learning materials, provision of bursaries and other support measures to girls and vulnerable students and strengthening capacities for effective education management at all levels.
ISEM has a special focus on girls in all its interventions and will ensure that girls are supported to access and complete secondary school. Bursaries, bicycles and other support mechanisms will be provided to ensure that this objective is achieved.
