Statement on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Missile Technology Control Regime
Today, the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) is celebrating its 30thanniversary. Three decades into its implementation, the MTCR continues to play a crucial role in curbing the proliferation of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicle technologies. The EU strongly supports the MTCR and other multilateral instruments that seek to limit the risks of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems.
Strong and coordinated national and international export controls help us prevent t certain goods, technologies and software from falling into the wrong hands. The EU has therefore set up a specific regime on export controls of dual use items that is legally binding for and directly applicable in all EU Member States, through Council Regulation 428/2009.
The European Union will continue to be a strong, consistent and reliable partner for those who believe that security comes through non-proliferation. The only way forward to make the world more secure for everyone, is to invest together in a strong system of global rules.
