EU election observation mission to Mauritania in 2006 and 2007

At the invitation of the Government of Mauritania, the European Union established a mission to observe the municipal and legislative elections on 19 November and 3 December 2006, as well as the presidential elections in Mauritania on 11 and 25 March 2007.

These were the first truly transparent and fair elections since the country won its independence. Marie-Anne Isler Béguin, member of the European Parliament, was Chief Observer.

The observers were deployed throughout the country. They met government and electoral officials, candidates and political parties, civil society representatives and the media.
