EU co-funded project provided Bishkek with new equipment
On 29th of May 2017, on the territory of municipal enterprise (ME) “Bishkek sanitary landfill” in frame of “Bishkek solid waste management improvement project” was held an official handover ceremony of special machinery and announcement of ecological and social impact assessment addendum disclosure (ESIA).
The event was attended by the representatives of Bishkek City Hall, the European Union and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The excavator-bulldozer, front loader and compactor were purchased for ME “BSL”, meanwhile the compactor is the unique one among Central Asian countries.
Within the framework of the project, work is ongoing on improving technical equipment of ME “BSL”. The contract on the design and construction of new sanitary landfill has been signed and the contract on reclamation of the existing landfill is being prepared for signature. Preliminary study of the project includes ecological and social impact assessment, as well as audit of the existing waste management facilities.
Information regarding ecological and social impact assessment (ESIA) will be posted on the websites of BCA (www.meria.kg), PIU (www.tbo.kg), EBRD (www.ebrd.com) for review by all interested parties. Hard copies of ESIA will also be available on the abovementioned websites.
The ESIA determined that improving conditions at the sanitary landfill, including waste reception area, would have a positive impact to the majority of residents who live in the vicinity of the existing landfill. The project will significantly improve the quality of solid waste disposal process in Bishkek and the living environment in the city as well.
“Bishkek solid waste management improvement project” is financed through a loan of 11 million EUR provided by the EBRD, and a grant of 11 million EUR provided by the European Union and EBRD.
