Statement by the Spokesperson on the terrorist attack in Ben Guerdane, Tunisia

07.03.2016
Text

The attack committed today by a terrorist group in Ben Guerdane once again illustrates the seriousness of the threat faced by Tunisia.

The EU reiterates its solidarity with the Tunisian people and government, and expresses its sincere condolences to the families of the victims among the civilian population and the security forces.

Since the 2011 revolution, the EU has mobilised all of its instruments to support the transition so that it offers young Tunisians prospects for the future, by consolidating democracy, addressing socio-economic challenges and ensuring the security of all citizens.

Terrorism is a shared challenge that requires a joint response. Cooperation between the EU and Tunisia in the field of security and the fight against terrorism has been stepped up recently, in particular with the launch of an ambitious programme to support security sector reform.

The EU is firmly committed to upholding democracy in Tunisia in its hour of need.
