Statement by the Spokesperson on the Declaration of the State of Emergency by the President of the Maldives

05.11.2015
Text

The decision to declare a State of Emergency and suspend fundamental freedoms enshrined in the constitution of the Maldives is the latest in a series of worrying developments in the country.

It is essential that all constitutional fundamental rights and freedoms are immediately restored and that due process of law is respected. A genuine dialogue with all political parties on the future of the country needs to be established.

The EU expects all parties to act responsibly and to exercise restraint.
