Statement by the Spokesperson on the ceasefire in Mali

Text

Yesterday’s signing of a ceasefire following two months of violent clashes between the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA) and the Platform marks a key step in restoring mutual trust between the signatories to the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali. Yesterday also saw the return of the Governor of Kidal, paving the way for the return of state authority in Kidal. The European Union praised the role played by MINUSMA, Algeria and the Malian government in helping secure the agreement.

The commitments made by the CMA and the Platform should help bring about a swift and definitive halt to hostilities, enabling sustained humanitarian access and the resumption of basic social services by the public authorities in the northern regions.

The European Union has reiterated its firm commitment to supporting the peace process so that Mali and the entire subregion can enjoy lasting peace. Full compliance with the commitments made as part of the Algiers Agreement is the only means to ensure peace, national reconciliation and sustainable and inclusive development in Mali.
