Ambassador Intelmann Makes Farewell call on Foreign Minister; Signs Election Observation MoU

Ambassador Tiina Intelmann leaves the country shortly after a successful two and half years stint as head of the EU Delegation to Liberia. During the Ambassador's farewell call on Foreign Minister Madam Marjon Kamara on Monday 28 August, the two signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the deployment of an EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to monitor the 2017 Presidential and general elections.
Together with a second MOU signed by the EU and the National Elections Commission (NEC), this paves the way for the EU to deploy the EOM in good time ahead of the elections in October. The EOM will consist of both long term and short term observers, and will have a total strength of around 80 people.
EU election observers maintain strict impartiality, objectivity and independence in the conduct of their mandate. They are bound by the Code of Conduct for EU Election Observers and also adhere to the Code of Conduct for International Election Observers. In addition to observing the run up to the elections and election day itself, the EOM will also monitor and challenges or complaints processes that may take place after the elections.
Following the signing of the MOU, Foreign Minister Kamara and Ambassador Intelmann discussed the strength of the EU-Liberia relationship and Minister Kamara wished the Ambassador well in her next assignment.
