Statement by the Spokesperson on the attacks in Iraq

12.06.2016
Text

Eid is about celebrating the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

It is a day to hope for peace and joy.

Yesterday's celebrations in Iraq have been stained by violence. More than 100 people were killed in the Iraqi Diyala province including women and children, and many were wounded by a terrorist attack.

We extend our condolences to the victims and their relatives.

Such violence tries to undermine Iraq’s efforts to return to peace and stability.

The perpetrators of such crimes must be brought to justice.

We stand together with the Iraqi people in our common fight against terrorism and sectarian violence.

The EU also remains committed to contributing to regional and international efforts to tackle violent extremism and terrorist groups that threaten regional and global stability.
