Spokesperson's statement on the situation in Burundi
The violent clashes that have been occurring since yesterday, leading to a number of dead and injured, show that peace is by no means yet assured in Burundi.
The main reason for the unrest is the decision by the CNDD-FDD party to nominate President Pierre Nkurunziza as its candidate for the 2015 presidential election. The EU calls on the President to approach this matter in a spirit of reconciliation, in the interests of the country and with a view to finding a solution that complies with the Arusha agreements.
With these considerations in mind, the forthcoming election must be credible, inclusive and non-violent. The EU's support and the presence of an election observation mission are linked to these criteria. The EU will continue to monitor developments closely in order to decide whether the conditions for its support are being met so that it can continue with its action.
There is no place in an election process for intimidation and violence, deaths and injuries, the detention of human rights defenders, media restrictions, and refugees fleeing to neighbouring countries. We urge all those involved in Burundi to show restraint. It is the job of the authorities to guarantee that civil and political rights can be exercised peacefully, including the right to demonstrate and the right to freedom of expression for all political players and for civil society and the media.
The EU, with its partners, would point out that those who, directly or indirectly, are behind violent acts and serious breaches of human rights will be held individually accountable.
