Over the two-days meeting, foreign ministers discussed how to address key challenges affecting both continents, such as security, terrorism, climate change or migration, and agreed to strengthen ASEM partnership for peace and sustainable development. ASEM partners also agreed on a definition of connectivity, which includes sustainability, economic viability and respect for international standards and norms as key guidance for ASEM's future work in the area.

Ahead of FMM13, Ministers attended a meeting on the situation in Rakhine State, presided by the State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The reunion saw constructive discussions and exchanges of views, with clear political will by both Myanmar and Bangladesh to move ahead on finding solutions to the situation on the ground, proven by the signing of a bilateral agreement on the repatriation of refugees in the immediate aftermath of the FMM13.

High Representative Federica Mogherini also held bilateral meetings with the Foreign Ministers of the People's Republic of China, Thailand and Cambodia, as well as having a youth outreach with participants of the ASEF 8th Model ASEM.

ASEM partners marked their calendar for the next ASEM Summit in Brussels, which will be hosted by the EU on the 18th and 19th of October 2018, under the theme 'Europe and Asia: Global Partners for Global Challenges'.

Background information: ASEM, the Asia-Europe Meeting, is a unique, informal platform for dialogue and cooperation between Asia and Europe, whose main purpose is to foster political dialogue, strengthen economic cooperation and promote people-to-people links;. The ASEM cooperation mechanism focuses on the major challenges in a fast-changing world - such as connectivity, trade and investment, migration, climate change, but also broad security challenges such as counter-terrorism, maritime security and cyber issues. Bringing together 53 partners from across Europe and Asia, ASEM works through meetings and activities organised at different levels and work fields.
