Kagitumba-Kayonza-Rusumo Road Rehabilitation & Widening Project

The sector goal is to contribute to socio-economic development, poverty reduction and regional integration through an improved and sustainable transport system that links centres of economic activity.

The road starts from Kagitumba (border of Uganda and Rwanda) on the Northern Corridor and ends at Rusumo on the Central Corridor (border with Tanzania).
The project development objectives are two-fold:
- at regional level, the objective is to contribute to improving road transportation and trade facilitation along the Northern Corridor via Mirama/Kagitumba border and the Central Corridor at Rusumo border; and
- at national level, the development objective is to contribute to improving transport services in Kagitumba-Kayonza-Rusumo area to stimulate and support local economic activities.
Project outcomes:
- improved transport services (reductions in vehicle operating costs and travel time);
- improved safety;
- increased mobility;
- improved access to economic and social facilities; and
- increased efficiency in delivery of road infrastructure.
The EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund Investment Grant will be used for financing:
- technical assistance, capacity building and support to T-SWAP Secretariat, pipeline road studies and road safety audit components; and
- civil works services of the Kagitumba - Bugaragara section (25km) of the Kagitumba–Karaganzi – Gabiro section of the project road.
