Statement by the Spokesperson on the Preliminary Statement of the EU Observation Mission in El Salvador

Text

On 4 March, the Salvadorian people cast their votes in legislative and municipal elections. El Salvador has confirmed its commitment to democracy in these polls, which were the most peaceful since the 1992 Peace Accords.

According to the Preliminary Statement of the EU Observation Mission, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal has successfully administered complex elections in the context of important reforms. The authorities of El Salvador made significant efforts to guarantee a transparent and inclusive process, including by protecting the rights to vote of vulnerable groups.

The Election Observation Mission is headed by Chief Observer Carlos Iturgaiz, a Member of the European Parliament. The Mission was deployed to El Salvador in January and will remain in the country until the electoral process is completed.

The EU remains committed to building on our close ties with El Salvador and to continuing to work closely with the Salvadorian authorities and its people.
