Text

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President
of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, met the Head of Government of the Republic of Tunisia, His Excellency Mr Youssef Chahed, today in Brussels.

They discussed the strong relations between the European Union and Tunisia and the current situation in the country.

Relations between the European Union and Tunisia are based on firm cooperation and many accomplishments. The High Representative and the Head of Government both expressed their shared desire to deepen that cooperation and secure even more tangible results for Tunisian citizens.

Since the revolution in 2011, the EU has been supporting the democratic transition process in Tunisia. In line with the 2016 Communication entitled ‘Strengthening EU support for Tunisia’, the EU provided financial cooperation amounting to EUR 300 million in 2017. The EU-Tunisia Association Council meeting on 15 May 2018 in Brussels will provide an opportunity to announce new decisions on strengthening the partnership and cooperation between the parties.

The High Representative stressed the importance of the municipal elections on 6 May 2018, which would be a further milestone in strengthening the country’s democratic process. The European Union deployed an election observation mission on 6 April 2018, thus demonstrating the continued support of the EU and its Member States for the Tunisian people’s consolidation of their democracy.

The High Representative and the Head of Government also discussed regional matters of mutual interest, such as their shared desire for a holistic and inclusive political solution to the crisis in Libya.
