Historic EU-Canada Summit builds Alliance for the Future

A historic time in EU-Canada relations sees growing momentum towards a much deeper relationship, which will allow the EU and Canada to tackle global challenges better together.

The 21st EU-Canada Summit in Montreal, Canada on 29-30 October 2026, launches an Alliance for the Future. In a world of increasing uncertainties, the EU and Canada turn to each other as partners of choice, and remain responsible and reliable global partners.

Alliance for the Future

The EU and Canada are strategically important partners, close friends and neighbours. We are partners of choice. Our cooperation is based on common values and interests, and a shared vision for the future.

Our bond is already strong and growing stronger. Together, we are taking the EU-Canada partnership to a new level.

We are launching an Alliance for the Future to create a common space for growth, prosperity, resilience and economic security. We are aligning more closely economically, technologically and strategically. This will allow us to meet today and tomorrow’s challenges, by bolstering our respective prosperity, resilience, security and sovereignty. Most importantly, we will deliver even more opportunities for our citizens.

We are already looking forward: together, we will start laying the grounds for a process leading to an ever closer association of Canada to the EU, short of full membership itself.

Partners in an uncertain world

Together, the EU and Canada are responsible and reliable global partners. We are a force for stability and peace. Our partnership is grounded in shared values: democracy, human rights, the rule of law, the multilateral rules-based international order, and free and fair trade.

In the area of foreign and security policy, the EU and Canada are already incredibly close. We are also partners in the UN, the G7 and NATO.

The EU and Canada have stood by Ukraine’s side since day one of the Russian aggression. Ukraine can count on our consistent and unwavering support. We are working towards Canada’s participation in the Ukraine Support Loan.

From the Arctic to the Middle East, we work closely in every key region and in every policy area, from sanctions to countering FIMI (foreign information manipulation and interference).

Canada Security and Defence Partnership

At our Summit in June 2025, the EU and Canada signed a Security and Defence Partnership (SDP). Since then, we have deepened our collaboration across the full spectrum of security and defence.

Canada has joined SAFE, strengthening our defence industrial cooperation.

And now we are launching three new dialogues under the SDP:

  • on the Arctic, to work together on a more secure and more prosperous Arctic;

  • on FIMI, to intensify our cooperation and make it more operational;

  • on climate-security, to address the climate change and security nexus.

Following a Canadian expression of interest, the EU has agreed to invite Canada to contribute to 3 more civilian CSDP missions: the EU Partnership Mission (EUPM) Armenia, the EU Partnership Mission (EUPM) Moldova and  the EU Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah Crossing Point (EUBAM Rafah).

Ultimately all relationships come down to the people. Take the example of our consular cooperation: during crises, we are the closest of partners. From the Middle East to Nepal, we have supported each other for evacuations of EU and Canadian citizens.

As the relationship deepens, the opportunities for people in the EU and Canada will grow. Follow the links below to learn more about this EU-Canada relationship.
