Europe Day was celebrated at the headquarters of the Delegation of the European Union in Uruguay on Tuesday 8 May. Ministers and other high authorities of the national and local governments attended the reception, as well as Senators, Deputies, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the Uruguayan private sector and civil society.

Within the framework of the event, the trade, cultural and educational presence of the EU in Uruguay was highlighted. Companies importing European food and beverages showcased their products, and European car importers exhibited select high-end vehicles. In addition, the EUNIC Montevideo network of European national institutes of culture and Uruguayan schools with links to EU Member States highlighted their activities and courses offered.

In his speech, Ambassador Karl-Otto König stressed that the EU is the only super soft power in the world, stressed the value of multilateralism and defended democracy. He pointed out that we do not need the use of force, but the force of public international law. And he concluded that we do not need walls, but bridges.
