Text

In the month of September, the EU Delegation to the Federal Republic of Somalia signed three contracts worth EUR 19.8 million to support stabilisation and local governance across Somalia.

The contracts will implement a wide range of activities, including community reconciliation and peace building, the formation of district councils and provision of institution capacity building, as well as delivery of services and infrastructure. All activities will contribute to enhance the legitimacy of Federal and Member State governments to ultimately foster reconciliation and generate security and stability in Somalia

Infrastructure works to be financed include the rehabilitation of the Mogadishu Stadium and the construction of Baraawe airstrip.

''With the signing of these new contracts, the EU demonstrates its tangible support to the implementation of the Transition Plan for Somalia to assume security for its own citizens, as well as to key infrastructure, service and institutional needs in Federal Member States" said the EU Chargé d’Affaires, Pencho Garrido Ruiz.

The three new projects will be implemented by Finn Church Aid, the Somalia Stability Fund and the Nordic International Support Foundation in collaboration with relevant Government Ministries at Federal and Member States level.

The recently signed contracts are part of the broader EU’s EUR 83 million Inclusive Local and Economic Development (ILED) Programme, approved in May 2018 and aiming to contribute to stability in Somalia by extending state authority and services, promoting local reconciliation, and creating inclusive economic opportunities.
