EU Solidarity in Action

On Saturday, 29 September, the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini and the EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides, expressed their deepest condolences for the tragic loss of life and pledged the EU's support.

On Sunday, 30 September, the EU released € 1.5 million in emergency humanitarian assistance and the Copernicus satellite mapping service was activated to produce satellite imagery (18 maps so far) of the affected areas to assess the damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami.

At this stage, the total collective EU aid amounts to more than € 18 million. Appeals in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK have raised over € 43 million showing the generosity of Europeans.

The EU deployed  civil protection and humanitarian experts (in Jakarta and disaster areas) to  participate in the assessment and help coordinate the EU's relief efforts.

On 2 October the EU Civil Protection (EUCP) Mechanism was activated following an official request for assistance from the Indonesian government. The mechanism channels EU Member States’ offers of assistance to the Indonesian authorities. It also co-finances EU Member States efforts.
