Statement by the Spokesperson on the case of Ahmed Mansoor

01.01.2019
Text

On 31 December 2018 the Federal Supreme Court of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) upheld a ten-year sentence from May of the same year against Ahmed Mansoor. Since this initial sentencing in May, the European Union has not received any information on the appeals process, its timing, and the possibility to observe the trial. We believe that no one shall be detained merely on the grounds of peacefully expressing his or her opinions. The rights to freedom of opinion and freedom of expression, including on social networks, as they are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are key principles that we will continue to stand up for. The European Union will continue to follow closely the case of Ahmed Mansoor and will in its talks with the UAE authorities seek for his case to be reconsidered.
