Statement by the High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the illegal decision to disqualify the President of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, from holding public office

Text

The European Union firmly condemns the recent illegal decision by the Comptroller General of Venezuela to disqualify the President of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, from holding public office for 15 years. Such a politically motivated decision without regard to due process is yet another demonstration of the arbitrary nature of judicial procedures in the country. A restoration of democracy, rule of law and separation of powers is imperative. These actions further undermine efforts to foster a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis in Venezuela.

The European Union fully supports the National Assembly and calls for the respect of the constitutionally mandated prerogatives and immunity of all its members, including its President.
