Statement by the spokesperson on the killing of soldiers in Ruqban, Jordan
The attack on the Ruqban district has killed 6 Jordanian soldiers and wounded security forces who were performing their duty, defending their country. In these difficult moments, the EU expresses its sincere condolences to the families and relatives of the victims as well as to Jordanian authorities and people.
More than ever, it reminds us all of the disastrous effect of the Syria war in the region. Jordan and Jordanians are particularly affected. The EU will continue to show full solidarity to Jordan and support the considerable efforts made by the country to contribute to the peace in the region and to host the Syrian refugees.
This attack is also another attempt to destabilise the region and its overall security. It is our collective duty to fight terrorism.
The EU is confident that the investigation carried out will shed light on the perpetrators of this attack and that justice will be brought.
We also trust that Jordan and the international community will keep finding appropriate arrangements for providing humanitarian assistance and protection for those in need and stand ready to support them.
