Statement by the High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the launch of ballistic missiles by the DPRK

Earlier today, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) launched three ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan. This is another clear and grave violation of the DPRK’s international obligations, as set out in UN Security Council Resolutions.

Text

Following its illegal nuclear test on 6 January, this latest act by the DPRK will heighten tensions on the Korean Peninsula and undermine the peace and security of the wider region.

The DPRK must comply with its international obligations and show restraint in its actions. The only road to peace and stability in the region is through the DPRK abandoning its ballistic missile, nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction programmes in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.

We call once more on the DPRK to refrain from any further actions that increase regional tensions and to engage in a credible and meaningful dialogue with the international community, in particular in the framework of the Six-Party Talks.

We are in close contact with all our partners and will work with them to address this latest action.
