Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, spoke today to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

In the phone conversation, the High Representative once again condemned the attempted coup of 15 July and expressed the full support of the European Union to the legitimate institutions of the country, while underscoring the expectations of the EU as to the compliance by Turkish authorities to the highest standards of the rule of law and fundamental rights and freedoms.

The High Representative also informed the Minister that she has decided to appoint Mr Christian Berger as the new Head of EU Delegation in Turkey. Mr Berger is currently the Director/Deputy Managing Director for the Middle East and North Africa in the European External Action Service (EEAS) and has 30 years of experience in various diplomatic positions in different international organisations, including in the EU institutions since 1997.
