EU-Funded "Giro di Ćiro Sarajevo–Pale" Cycling Trail Officially Opened

The "Giro di Ćiro Sarajevo–Pale" cycling trail was officially opened today by Ambassador Luigi Soreca, Head of EU Delegation to BiH and EU Special Representative to BiH and the Mayors of the City of Sarajevo, the City of Istočno Sarajevo, and the municipalities of Stari Grad, Istočni Stari Grad, and Pale in the presence of cycling clubs from both entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ahead of the ceremony, cycling clubs from the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and from Republika Srpska set off from opposite ends of the trail to meet at the inauguration site — a gesture symbolising the trail's role as a shared space and meeting point for citizens from across the country.

The trail was funded by the European Union with €2.3 million in grants as part of its continued support for sustainable tourism and healthier lifestyles in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Construction works have included the reconstruction of around 13 kilometres of cycling route, nine tunnels of various designs fitted with solar-powered lighting, two bridges, and one bypass section, along with the installation of road signage and protective barriers.

The route follows the historical corridor of the narrow-gauge "Ćiro" railway, tracing the Miljacka and Paljanska Miljacka rivers along the foothills of Mount Trebević. With an average gradient of 2.5–3.5%, the trail is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of cyclists. It begins at Sarajevo's Vijećnica (City Hall), passes through the Dariva pedestrian zone, and connects with the former railway corridor near "Vrelo Života", ending near the old Pale railway station.

The project was implemented in cooperation with the City of Sarajevo, the City of Istočno Sarajevo, and the municipalities of Stari Grad, Istočni Stari Grad, and Pale.
