You are an EU citizen in Chile?

Learn more about your right to consular protection and how you can benefit from it in Chile.

Consular protection is the assistance that an EU Member State can provide to its citizens when they need help while travelling or living abroad.

It may include assistance in situations such as:

  • loss or theft of a passport or other travel document;
  • a serious accident or illness;
  • relief and repatriation in an emergency;
  • being a victim of crime;
  • arrest or detention;
  • death.

In Chile, 18 EU Member States have a resident Embassy, while 9 EU Member States do not.

Do you need consular assistance in Chile?

If your EU Member State is represented in Chile, you should contact its Embassy, Consulate or other competent consular authority.

If your EU Member State is not represented in Chile, you are entitled to seek assistance from the Embassy or Consulate of another EU Member State represented in the country.

Unrepresented EU citizens are entitled to receive consular protection under the same conditions as nationals of the assisting EU Member State.

Specific arrangements for consular protection apply in Chile for citizens of the following EU Member States:

  • Latvia – consular protection provided by Spain;
  • Lithuania – consular protection provided by Hungary;
  • Luxembourg – consular protection provided by Belgium;
  • Slovakia – consular protection provided by Czechia.

You can find below the contact details of EU Member State Embassies, Consulates and other competent representations in Chile, as well as information on the specific arrangements applying to unrepresented EU citizens.

Please note: the Delegation of the European Union to Chile does not provide direct consular assistance.

Before travelling

As an EU citizen, you can take a few simple steps to make it easier to receive assistance if needed:

  • check and follow the latest travel advice issued by your country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • register your stay with your national authorities before travelling, where such a service is available;
  • keep secure paper and/or electronic copies of your important travel documents;
  • make sure you have adequate travel and medical insurance;
  • save the relevant emergency and consular contact details before travelling.
