Press conference by Maka Kocijancic, spokeswoman for the High Representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, on the situation in Chile.

24.10.2019

We deplore the incidents and violence that we have seen in Chile over the past days, the loss of lives, the lootings and destruction of properties.

In that context we noted the announcement of the state of emergency and curfew in parts of the country.

It is important to recognise the social protests are legitimate in a democratic society.  They need to be peaceful and respectful of the rule of law.

We call on all actors to act with restraint, responsibility and to deescalate the situation for the differences and the grievances to be resolved through dialogue and in democratic means.
