Plundered Heritage: The Global Displacement and Trade of Ancient Egyptian Artefacts

The EU Delegation to Egypt was proud to host Reem Moustafa for an eye-opening lecture titled “Plundered Heritage: The Global Displacement and Trade of Ancient Egyptian Artefacts.”
Drawing on her doctoral research at the London School of Economics, Reem unpacked the legacy of colonial legal systems that legitimized the removal of heritage, the shortcomings of international law in addressing illicit trafficking, and the ongoing culture of impunity surrounding the trade in cultural property.
With academic credentials from Harvard Law School and legal practice experience in New York and Cairo, Reem offered a unique and deeply informed perspective at the intersection of cultural heritage, international law, and global policy.
The discussion underscored the EU’s continued commitment to fostering dialogue around heritage protection, justice, and cultural cooperation.
