Europe Day (9 May) commemorates the 1950 Schuman Declaration, which laid the foundation for a united Europe. The European project was built on a simple yet powerful vision: that people should live in freedom, enjoy equal rights and be treated with dignity and equality. Emerging from the devastation of the Second World War, Europe’s founders chose cooperation over conflict, democracy over authoritarianism, and solidarity over division. In today’s increasingly complex global landscape, the EU’s role in advancing peace, security, partnership and shared values remains more important than ever.
