EU Beach Clean-Up 2023 at Pulau Rambut

The EU Delegation to Indonesia organised a beach clean-up on 25 June 2023 at Pulau Rambut, Kepulauan Seribu, off the coast of Jakarta. Pulau Rambut is an uninhabited island and a nature reserve, but a lot of litter washes up on its beaches due to the current.

The beach clean-up was held in collaboration with Langit Biru Pertiwi, a community that aims to protect the environment and combat climate change in Indonesia.

Participating in the beach clean-up were European Commission’s Director General for Environment, Mrs Florika Fink-Hooijer, and EU Ambassador to ASEAN, H.E. Igor Driesmans. Together with around 30 EU Delegation staff and volunteers, a total of 514 kg of litter were collected.

The collected litter were then handed over to Plustik, a startup focusing on recycling litter. Through their innovative processes, it will be transformed into products with added-value like eyeglass frames and plastic bricks.

“Today’s beach clean-up in Indonesia at Pulau Rambut reminds us of the urgency to act. We need to reduce and make plastics fully circular. Thank you to all the volunteers that joined us,” said Florika Fink-Hooijer.
