EU launches Climate Diplomacy Week 2022: high time for collaborative climate action

The European Union (EU) and its Member States launched today (18/9) the Climate Diplomacy Week through a collective clean-up event in Jakarta and Bali. Climate Diplomacy Week is part of the global campaign aimed at fostering cooperation and inspiring real action for the climate. Held from 18 September through to 1 October, Climate Diplomacy Week 2022 will present a series of events with the theme ‘Green and Blue for Our Climate’.

“Climate change is the most critical global challenge of our times. We see the effects of climate change in our everyday lives, across the globe and no country is spared. When we talk about climate action, we are talking about transitioning to clean energy, creating green jobs, and promoting a circular economy,” said EU Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Vincent Piket. “We believe tackling climate change not only benefits the environment but also improves our quality of life and the economy. We believe tackling climate change calls for collaboration with all parts of society. This is why we continue reaching out to the Indonesian public, especially the youth community, to celebrate and step up our climate action,” added EU Ambassador Piket on the occasion of Climate Diplomacy Week. The EU and its Member States kicked off the Climate Diplomacy Week through a plogging event – picking up litter and jogging – at the Jakarta Car Free Day area along Sudirman-Thamrin area.

The plogging event, which also celebrates the World Cleanup Day, aims to raise awareness on the urgency of reducing single-use plastics to protect marine life that sustains our planet and the climate. Taking part in the plogging were representatives from the Jakarta Provincial Office for the Environment, the GIZ-funded project Rethinking Plastics and community partners World Cleanup Day Indonesia and Plustik.

Against the backdrop of the global energy crisis, energy issue takes centre stage at this year’s Climate Diplomacy Week. The EU has developed a set of comprehensive policies to support a faster roll-out of renewable energy while phasing out fossil fuel through the EU Green Deal and the ‘Fit for 55’. This policy package will reduce the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions by 55% and increase the energy efficiency target to 32.5% by 2030.

Young people’s contributions will be highlighted in this year’s Climate Diplomacy Week as Europe celebrates the European Year of the Youth 2022. “We are deeply inspired by young people and civil society across the globe who are spearheading climate action, making the issue a priority and pressing for changes in policies and business practices. It is high time to listen to them and step up our collaborative climate action for the benefit of the planet, people and prosperity,” said EU Ambassador Piket.

Climate Diplomacy Week 2022 will cover three thematic areas: climate action and clean energy transition; nature, ocean, forest and biodiversity protection; sustainable cities and circular economy. In partnership with a wide range of communities in Indonesia, Climate Diplomacy Week 2022 will feature interactive talkshows, a film screening, a youth pitching competition, collective cycling, music performance, and many more. All activities are free and open to the public with prior registration at https://climatediplomacyweek2022.id/.
