European Union Social DigiThon 2021 winners promote technological innovations in the fight against cyberbullying
The Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Indonesia announced today (20/11) the winners of the EU Social DigiThon 2021, a competition in search of technologically-based solutions to combat cyberbullying.
The winners are:
- 1st Place: Share Platform Team with an application designed to report, respond and resolve cyberbullying;
- 2nd Place: GOTCHA Team with a one-stop solution to create a safer environment for children;
- 3rd Place: KINCIR: For Kinder Children Team, with a browser extension to censor harmful content; and SRG Team with the KindBoard, a keyboard filter that checks for cyberbullying across all platforms. The exceptional submissions from the KINCIR and SRG Team ranked them both in third place ex aequo.
As part of the EU4HumanRights series of events to celebrate International Human Rights Day in 2021, the EU Delegation to Indonesia launched the EU Social DigiThon in September 2021. Now in its second edition, the EU Social DigiThon 2021 was organised in partnership with the Association of Internet of Things Indonesia (ASIOTI), the Indonesian Cybercrime Combat Center (IC4), Semai Jiwa Amini (SEJIWA) Foundation, and Association of Clinical Psychologist Indonesia (IPK Indonesia).
Nearly two years into the pandemic, children are among the most affected groups, with far-reaching consequences for their learning and well-being. Their daily lives are increasingly shifting to the online space and while it provides endless opportunities, it has also given rise to new forms of violence. Against this background, the theme of this year’s Social Digithon, “Tackling Cyberbullying Towards Children”, aimed to raise awareness of the prevalence of this issue and promote solutions offered by the Indonesian youth.
The amount of proposals received this year reflects how salient the issue is in Indonesia, with 105 teams registered and 29 qualified initiatives. After several assessment phases, the winning teams were identified based on their proposals’ technical advancements and usability.
“The coronavirus pandemic has shown how crises disrupt children’s lives, no matter which country they live in. With the shift of activities to the digital space presents opportunities for learning and connection, it has also presented new challenges, including cyberbullying. The EU believes that extra measures are needed to protect children and adolescents in the digital world, while fully protecting their right to access the internet for their development. To this end, we are proud to introduce four young Indonesian innovators whose proposals are expected to address the prevalent issue of cyberbullying, seen not only in Indonesia but across the globe,” said EU Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Vincent Piket.
This year, the panel of judges was composed of five people: Saiti Gusrini from the EU Delegation to Indonesia, Fita Indah Maulani from the Association of Internet of Things Indonesia (ASIOTI), Ruby Alamsyah from the Indonesia Cyber Crime Combat Center (IC4), Oktavianus Ken from the Indonesian Association of Clinical Psychologists (Indonesian GPA), and Diena Haryana from the SEJIWA Foundation. Winners were assessed based on the originality of their ideas, creativity, usability, as well as conformity to principles of child protection, gender equality, social inclusion, and no harm.
Winners are entitled to seed grants to help turn their ideas into reality. The first prize and second prize winners will receive a grant of IDR 50 million and IDR 30 million, respectively. The two teams that came in third position will each receive a grant of IDR 20 million. All four winners will also participate in mentoring led by experts from Europe.
