EU supports Indonesia higher education through Erasmus Plus Programme
The European Union (EU) funded programme, Erasmus Plus is providing support to higher education institutions in Indonesia through institutional and capacity building projects. Today (28/11), the EU organised an information session on the international dimension of Erasmus Plus programme to 100 representatives of Indonesian universities. The event was officially opened by Mr Margus Solnson, the Head of Political, Press and Information of the EU Delegation to Indonesia, in the presence of Mr Purwanto Subroto, PhD, Head of Sub-Directorate for Higher Education Cooperation of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture.
“We are delighted today to announce a call for proposals and funding opportunities through our flagship Erasmus Plus programme addressed to higher education institutions worldwide, including Indonesian universities. The EU and the Government of Indonesia share a common vision to strengthen the capacity and quality of higher education, and we are committed to supporting Indonesia in meeting that agenda,” said EU Ambassador Vincent Piket.
The Erasmus Plus programme offers various instruments for support to higher education institutions such as Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) programme, Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD), Jean Monnet and International Credit Mobility (ICM).
The Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia values the EU support to the development of Indonesia higher education sector. Erasmus Plus is aligned with the Ministry’s agenda in terms of building the capacity of Indonesia higher education institutions, particularly through international experience.
Mr Purwanto Subroto, PhD, stated, “We hope Erasmus Plus goes beyond fostering our local universities to build their international experience abroad, but also presenting international experience in our own home country. We have been witnessing the Erasmus Plus Summer Program and Double Degree Programme successfully run in a number of Indonesian universities, and wish to see higher opportunities in the development of mobility programmes that are two-ways, reciprocal and of mutual-benefit for both parties.”
Erasmus Programme is currently funding 35 CBHE projects involving 54 Indonesian universities/ institutions covering various topics, including curriculum development, improving access and quality education for students with special needs, advancing modernisation of higher education, development of entrepreneurship in universities, student employability and industry 4.0. Meanwhile, the Jean Monnet programme is currently funding projects at three universities in Indonesia, with a focus on European studies.
Through the Erasmus International Credit Mobility, a total of 1,290 Indonesian students and scholars have participated in short-term studies and teaching in universities across Europe; whereas a total of 766 European students and scholars have come to Indonesia. Through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Degree, more than 500 Indonesian students undertook their joint Master's degrees in Europe.
The EU support is relevant to assist Indonesia in achieving key targets:
- to align skills development in higher education with the needs of the labour market
- to make higher education widely accessible, more inclusive and increasing its societal outreach
- to boost the innovation capacity of higher education, and
- to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of higher education.
