European Parliament visits Jakarta, discusses Transport and Tourism with government and stakeholders
A delegation of the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) is currently on a three-day visit in Jakarta. This visit is part of a broader initiative to engage with the Indonesian government and various stakeholders and discuss sustainable transport and tourism in the light of current and future challenges (e.g. decarbonisation and recovery from the COVID pandemic).
Transport and tourism are two crucial economic sectors that intersect with environmental protection and climate action. Consequently, the development of a more efficient and cleaner transport that is widely accessible is a key priority. The head of the TRAN delegation, Mr Marian-Jean Marinescu, underlined: “For the TRAN committee, enhancing connectivity and competitiveness of the transport sector as well as avoiding transport poverty are also crucial.”
The visit of the TRAN delegation comes at a timely moment, since Indonesia is the Chair of the Association for Southeast Nations (ASEAN) this year. “Through this visit, we aim to not only deepen the dialogue between European and Indonesian transport and tourism stakeholders but also to discuss the immense potential of ecotourism and clean energy-powered solutions,” said Mr Marinescu. “Together, we can transform the challenges of urban transportation into opportunities for sustainable development, contributing to our global climate action initiatives.”
This visit facilitated a valuable exchange of perspectives between the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and Indonesian stakeholders, including the Minister of Transportation, the Minister of Tourism, civil society organisations and industry.
Today, 17 May 2023, the MEPs visited the National Monument (Monas) and the Mangrove Ecotourism Centre. They gained insights into Indonesia’s national strategy on mangrove ecosystem management, while also sharing updates on the EU’s ambitious biodiversity policies.
The MEPs took part in a mangrove planting in the Mangrove Ecosystem Centre. “We are happy to have seen a great example of an educative ecotourism site, which takes into consideration the needs of local communities and the benefits to local stakeholders. Mangroves provide important ecosystem services, e.g., shelter for surrounding biodiversity, a buffer against coastal erosion, and a major carbon sink,” said Mr Marinescu.
