Delegation selects logo design to mark the 50th year of EU diplomatic representation in Japan

In 2024, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Japan will mark 50 years since the establishment of the Delegation of the Commission of the European Communities (EC) in Tokyo in 1974. On this occasion, the EU Delegation organised a commemorative logo design competition, which was won by Mr Makoto Aoki, a graphics designer in Tokyo.

The selected design is a grouping of letters and “kanji” characters that represent “50”, “EU” and “Japan” in a style reminiscent of traditional Japanese ‘hanko’ seals, expressing the deep and broad relationship that has developed between the EU and Japan over the past decades in an understated manner.

In December, EU Ambassador to Japan Jean-Eric Paquet invited Mr Aoki to the Delegation to personally convey his gratitude for the designer’s interest in Europe and the sophisticated design and present him with a commemorative gift.

The logo will be used on various promotional materials as well as the Delegation’s social media channels (X [ex-Twitter], Facebook, Instagram) during the course of 2024.
