Malawi and European Union hold Political Dialogue
On 4th June 2021, the Government of the Republic of Malawi and the European Union (EU) held a Political Dialogue meeting in accordance with Article 8 of the Cotonou Partnership Agreement between the EU and African, Caribbean and Pacific States. This is part of regular political dialogues between Malawi and the European Union on issues of mutual interest. The discussion was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an open and constructive manner.
Speaking at the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Mkaka, observed that the interaction between the two sides during the dialogue presented an opportunity to shape the cooperation for the next twelve months particularly with discussions on the 2021/2022 national budget, Malawi’s assumption of the SADC Chairmanship, and the schedule towards hosting the SADC Summit in August, 2021.
The EU Charge d’Affaires, Ms Aurelie Valtat, said over the past year, the Government of Malawi had proved that it was serious about tackling corruption, creating a conducive environment for businesses, and achieving inclusive growth, despite a challenging year on the economic and health front. She said the meeting offered a perfect opportunity for both partners to align their plans with the Malawi 2063 vision and explore areas for strengthened cooperation.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to keeping a regular high-level political dialogue between them and to the promotion of shared values of democracy, rule of law, good governance and human rights.
