EU-ASEAN Tree Planting as part of Green Diplomacy Weeks

The European Union Delegation to Singapore planted trees at Outram Park in Singapore on Thursday, 1st February 2024, as part of the EU’s global #ForOurPlanet campaign.

The trees planted contribute towards the National Parks Board’s OneMillionTrees movement, which aims to plant one million more trees by 2030 with the community, as part of efforts to transform Singapore into a City in Nature. Ahead of the 24th EU-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Brussels on 2 February 2024, the tree planting event in Singapore marked ASEAN and the EU's commitment to deepening their cooperation towards a more sustainable future.

Iwona Piórko, European Union Ambassador to Singapore opened the EU-ASEAN Tree Planting event with Ambassadors of the EU Member States and ASEAN countries to Singapore.  Deputy Secretary Foo Chi Hsia from Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the Guest of Honour. Several of Singapore’s COP28 Youth Delegates and a number of young climate activists also participated.

Says Iwona Piórko, EU Ambassador to Singapore: “The EU and ASEAN have been close partners for decades. We have worked continuously to address common challenges and create a better future for both ASEAN and EU citizens. In December 2022, EU and ASEAN celebrated 45 years of dialogue relations. It is only fitting - as our Foreign Ministers meet in Brussels for the 3rd Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum and the 24th EU-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting - that we mark the joint commitment of our two regions to a more sustainable tomorrow here in Singapore.”

The 24th EU-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting held in Brussels on 2nd February 2024 was co-chaired by HR/VP Josep Borrell and the Philippines’ Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Enrique Manalo. A Joint Statement was agreed, focusing on cooperation in trade, green and digital transition, economic security, connectivity investments and cybersecurity. Ministers also reviewed the implementation of decisions adopted at the EU-ASEAN Commemorative Summit held in December 2022. An Op-Ed by HR/VP Borrell on the occasion was published in The Business Times on 5th February 2024.
