European Commissioner Mairead McGuinness in Singapore

From 13 to 16 November, European Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union, Mairead McGuinness attended the Singapore FinTech Festival (SFF) 2023.

During her visit, Commissioner McGuinness joined policymakers, financial services leaders, entrepreneurs, investors and technology experts from all over the world to discuss the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in financial services, this year’s theme of SFF.

On November 14th, the Commissioner spoke at the Elevandi Insights Forum, which preceded the official opening of the Festival.  Commissioner McGuinness participated in two roundtables: the first organised by the Monetary Authority of Singapore on the topic of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and tokenised money; the second by Bloomberg, focusing on EU-APAC cooperation in sustainable finance.

Commissioner McGuinness met Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at The Treasury. “Singapore is a global hub for finance & FinTech. An honour to meet Lawrence Wong, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister & Finance Minister. Many topics of common interest: digital finance, sustainable finance & the need for strong global structures to deal with common challenges” she wrote on X following the meeting.

On November 15th, the opening day of SFF, she engaged in a fireside chat at the main festival stage on the topic of adoption of CBDCs and its impact on financial stability and financial inclusion. In this setting, she also met Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and IMF’s Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. At the SFF, she visited all the European Pavilions and did three exclusive media interviews.

She participated (together with the Irish Minister of State MacNeill) in a fireside chat on Fintech and Innovation in Europe, organised by EuroCham Singapore and the Irish Chamber of Commerce.
