Are you a young graduate interested in international relations? Are you curious to learn more about work of a diplomatic mission and how the EU Delegation represents EU interests and values in our work with the Holy See, the Sovereign Order of Malta, the UN Organisations in Rome and the Republic of San Marino?

We offer:

Two traineeships of 6 months in 2026 at the EU Delegation to the Holy See, the Sovereign Order of Malta, the UN Organisations in Rome and the Republic of San Marino, based in Rome,Italy. The tentative start date is 15 October 2026.

The EU Delegation in Rome has a bilateral mission to the Holy See, the Sovereign Order of Malta and the Republic of San Marino, and a multilateral mission to the three United Nations (UN) Organisations based in Rome: the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). We also cover the  UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS).

The EU Delegation in Rome promotes EU values and interests in both the bilateral and multilateral contexts, with a particular focus on peace, security, human rights, food security, agriculture, humanitarian aid and sustainable development. We work for strengthening multilateralism and international law, in particular international humanitarian law. The EU Delegation also plays a crucial role in coordinating EU Member States in Rome at regular meetings of the EU Heads of Missions, thereby ensuring consistent common EU messages, and reinforcing the EU’s visibility in Rome.

Main tasks: 

  • Assist with taking notes and drafting reports in a variety of meetings and consultations.
  • Engage in research and assist with the preparation of briefings & background notes.
  • Support colleagues with outreach activities and negotiations in the UN context.
  • Support colleagues with the practical and logistical aspects in organising meetings/events/visits & with communications.

We look for:

Qualifications or special requirements:

  • Be a citizen from the EU Member States
  • Have obtained a Master’s Degree in relevant discipline, e.g. international politics, European studies, international relations, international law, international economics, agricultural, food security or development studies. Candidates without a Master’s Degree are NOT eligible to apply for these traineeships.
  • Very good English language skills (written and oral); the ability to work in another EU language would be an added advantage; 
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills 
  • Ability to fulfil work-assignments in a team.
  • Candidates must have less than one year of professional experience after their graduation by the signing of the Traineeship agreement. (other traineeships or student jobs or volunteering works carried out during university or after graduation are not considered as professional experience)

Important information to read before applying

Before applying you are requested to examine the dedicated website as well as the general eligibility criteria for a paid traineeship (Article 8 of the Decision ADMIN(2017)28 – Paid traineeship).

Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. All costs related to travels, visa, insurance, accommodation must be borne by the trainee. 

Applications from non-eligible candidates will not be considered. After the evaluation of all applications, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email. In case the selected candidates are not able to present the required documents, their application will be rejected.

The traineeships can only be offered in compliance with the local legislation as well as the legislation of the country of origin. 

Citizens from EU Member states:

  • must provide proof that they will be covered against the risk of a pandemic and the costs of repatriation;
  • must hold a relevant entrance visa and / or temporary residence permit where applicable,  based on the traineeship agreement, the duration of the traineeship, and in compliance with the local legislation.
